Meet Mandy – Mandy works at the Jonesborough library, loves her fur baby, Ellie May, and writes children's and adult books.
This month, Mandy reviews a beloved children's book, Hazel the Handful, by Jamie Michalak!
"Hazel the Handful" is a children's picture book written by Jamie Michalak and illustrated by Matt Myers. In this beautifully written book, you'll meet Hazel, a tiny dog with a huge personality. Hazel's life is more than perfect - it's sensational! Especially with Bea, her human, by her side. However, a new arrival upsets everything. Michalak's cadence is perfect for a children's book, and Myers' illustrations are sure to keep readers of all ages engaged, as well as entertained. I was particularly drawn to this book because of Hazel. She reminds me so much of my puppy, Ellie May. Ellie May is also tiny with a huge personality. Hazel and Bea have wonderful, marvelous - SENSATIONAL! - adventures together. There are walks, stroller rides, games, photo shoots, snacks, favorite toys, and lots of love!
Until...
Bea pays more attention to the new baby. Suddenly, Hazel's life is no longer sensational. She has to share Bea, and everything changes. Hazel seems to be completely forgotten. What will happen to poor Hazel? Read this wonderful picture book to find out!
Not only is it a fun book to read with beautiful illustrations, there's an underlying seriousness about it - a reminder that familial changes impact furbabies as well. "Hazel the Handful" is a book that I highly recommend and can be enjoyed over and over again!
